The drought of 1988 put a huge dent in crop production, top soils blew away and erased early plantings; farmers were made aware of the need for soil conservation and new farming techniques. The Soil and Water Conservation District presented awards to outstanding farmers practicing erosion control. Dick and Doug Shock, father and son, received the “Conservation Farmer of the Year” honor. The Goodyear Award presented by Goodyear Tire Company was given to Tom and Becky Price of rural Atwood. John Weyler, rural Pierceton, was given the “Environmental Enhancement Award.” Members of the SWCD board of supervisors are Garry Tom, Richard Sponseller, Don Zolman, Wayne Sholtey and Hubert Krull. District conservationist is Sam St. Clair.

Thomas Martin, Syracuse, is a member of the steering committee for the 1964 Indiana University “Sing.” The program has been sponsored by the campus YMCA and YWCA since 1932 and will take place on Feb. 29 with afternoon and evening shows.
Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. board members have employed Mary Durham, Warsaw, to alleviate the crowded conditions in the first and second grades of the Mentone school. She will begin instructing a combined group of students Jan. 27.

Times cameraman snaps Gilbert Bertsch, nine-year manager of the local Security Loan branch, in his office in the Elks arcade building just as he glances up from reading the headlines of his newspaper. The Security Loan has maintained offices in Warsaw for 25 years. He maintains a staff of four including Herbert McWhorter, Merrill Foster and Mrs. George Phillips, formerly Phyllis Kleckner.
Professor I. W. Sharp, 91-year-old veteran, likes to visit Winona Lake occasionally. He says his hobby is reading history. Nancy Walters, 91, can tell you more first-hand information about Warsaw during Civil War times than anyone.
The Emma Breckenridge Sunday School class in the Presbyterian Church bought new chairs for the choir. Ed Boyer sings louder, Bruce Howard sits up straighter and Vic Hatfield has not slept a wink.
