The Bear Den of Eisenhower Cub Scout Pack 3731 completed four blankets for Project Linus at their den meeting Jan. 19, which will be shared with organizations that help children in crisis situations.
Bryce Durgin, Warsaw, earned a Gold A at the Culver Academies, the highest academic honor, by attaining a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher. He also was inducted into Blue Key, the honor society for juniors. Sophomore Kristofer Klondaris, Warsaw, earned a Silver A, the second highest academic honor, by attaining a GPA of 3.2 or better.
25 Years
Ace Hardware donated a dog house, built by the construction classes at Warsaw Community High School, to Warsaw police officer Bob Long and his canine unit, Jimmy. Bob Montel is consumer technology instructor at the school.
Sixth-graders from Warsaw Christian School performed the musical, "Tom Sawyer," Friday, Feb. 22, with Nate Krogel as Tom and Suzanne Eaton playing Aunt Polly.
The White Sox, one of Warsaw's Little League teams, will be coached by Burleigh Burgh, who operates Breading's Cigar Store, this summer. He'll be assisted by Mayor Jeff Plank. "It's a match made in heaven," said street superintendent and baseball coach Kim Leake.
50 Years
Gary McManama, 16, a junior at Larwill High School, is the Whitley County winner of the American Legion Oratorical Contest, and will represent the county in the district contest at New Haven School on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2 pm. Gary is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith McManama, Route 1, Larwill.
NIPSCO linemen Wayne Noble and John Pinkerton work around a "hot" 12,000-volt line from a bucket of a snorkel high above the other workmen. Helping out on the ground are Gene Zolman, Marion Smith, Loren Gross and Eugene Fisher. The men worked in subzero weather this morning, Feb. 2, to finish the project along State Rd. 15, south of Warsaw.
75 Years
Over 75 loads of sand has been hauled on the ice in front of the Warsaw park pavilion, Custodian Clyde Miller said Tuesday, Jan. 28. When the ice melts, the sand will settle to the bottom, improving the beach.
The Tippecanoe Lake independent basketball team defeated Mentone, 35 to 27, in a benefit game at Mentone High School Tuesday evening, Jan. 28. Proceeds went to the infantile paralysis fund.
Walter Stout, vocational agriculture teacher at Claypool High School, left Wednesday, Jan. 29, for Camp Blanding, Fla. to serve as an officer with the regular U.S. Army. Byron Ulrich, of north of Milford, has been secured to take Stout's position in the Claypool school. He has been substituting at Milford and Leesburg.
