The “Man and Woman of the Year” awards have been sponsored by The Times-Union and WRSW Radio since 1959. Jan. 28 H.G. “Gus” Sideris, Warsaw, and Rita Schobert, Winona Lake, were named the 2003 Man and Woman of the Year during the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce banquet. Sideris remains active as president of Heartline Pregnancy Center and Barnabas Mission Program. Schobert is a volunteer with the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and the Billy Sunday Museum. DeWayne and Melody Barker, Barker Enterprises, won Entrepreneur of the Year; James and Kay Smith, Smith Appliances, 2003 Business Award; Jerry Irvine, G.I. Tape and Label, Industry Award; Vicki Robinson, KCH, ATHENA Award; Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine, Government Excellence Award.

1989 Kosciusko Shrine Club officers are Mike Ringer, president; Robert Burner, vice president; Al Rovenstine, secretary; and John Bonner, treasurer. Outstanding Shriner for 1988 is Loren Trindle.
The Atlantic Bridge Division of Indiana Lakes Area Youth for Christ is preparing for a cultural exchange tour to high schools in Europe. This year’s team will include Kelli Hoke and Rachel Keele, of Warsaw Community High School, and Thad Winter, of Lakeland Christian Academy, who will be working with local workers in Holland, Belgium and Sweden. They’ll join project coordinator Jerry Landrum on his third tour.

Wayne Carlin, Pierceton, goes high to tap in a rebound as Norm Dukes of Leesburg tries vainly to stop the shot. Other Leesburg players are Ed Lyons, Larry Bishop and Dean Boggs. Pierceton’s Ray Slusher is hemmed in by three Leesburg cagers, but manages to get off a pass. Pierceton Cubs advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Leesburg’s Blue Blazers, 73-57.
Warsaw’s freshman basketball team will compete in a four-way tournament this Saturday at Plymouth. A championship would produce a record of 11-0 this season. Warsaw plays Nappanee in the first game; Plymouth plays Bremen. Jan Essenburg, Doug Moore and Ben Niles paced Warsaw as they defeated Southwood 54-37 Wednesday. Ronnie Clase did not play because of an injury in Monday’s game.

Frank Stephens, principal of Akron High School; C.L. Dye, vocational agriculture instructor; and Stuart Slaybaugh, who graduated last year, have purchased a male pig sired by the great boar Lauxmont Wave Gold, 1938 world champion, from the Lauxmont Farms, Wrightsville, Pa. Dye has a number of students carrying swine projects who secured their foundation stock from Perry M. Barker, Thorntown.
