Deniese Rickel and her gingerbread church was chosen by visitors as the People's Choice Winner in the annual Gingerbread Holiday Extravaganza at the Jail Museum, sponsored by the Kosciusko County Historical Society. Jeanne Weirick, chairperson of the contest, presented her with a certificate and membership to KCHS.
Kosciusko County Communications Dispatcher Robert L. Howatt retired last year and recently was honored by his fellow employees. Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine presented him with a laser engraved plaque. Howatt, Syracuse, originally was hired by Sheriff Ron Robinson in August 1990, and is currently employed in the satellite lab at Kosciusko Community Hospital.
25 Years
Fire at Hardesty Printing, West Market Street, Monday afternoon was quickly discovered and extinguished before much damage could occur. Firemen were called at 1:16 p.m. Jan. 7 when a stack of scrap paper was placed too close to a furnace and caught fire. Employees moved the stack of paper outside.
Several streets in Winona Lake were closed or heavily trafficked Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 6 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., while Zimmer conducted its annual employee meeting.
MedPark opens a new adolesdent treatment program Monday, Jan. 7: Dave Brebner, Kelly Quinn, Dr. Roland Snyder, Keith McWithey, Jo Stuart, Wayne Hendrix and Dan Doyle.
50 Years
Russell Hinderer, 66, has retired following 32 years of service in the Syracuse Post Office. He began his career as a postal clerk in May, 1933, holding various clerical positions until 1951, when he became a mail carrier on Route 1, out of Syracuse.
Sgt. Roy Bean has been promoted to the rank of captain on the Nappanee Police Force effective Jan. 1, according to Chief of Police Dean Middaugh. He has served the department for 13 and one-half years. Promoted to Sgt. First Class, from Sgt. Second Class, is Arthur Heckaman, who has served for six years.
Mr. and Mrs. Rex Parker, Route 1, Silver Lake, were honored at a dinner recently at the Steer Inn in celebration of their 25th anniversary. Sandy Sanders presided at piano.
75 Years
Herschel Schooley, of near Warsaw, a volunteer in Uncle Sam's draft army, returned to Fort Knox, Ky. after spending the Christmas holidays with his parents. Looking spic and span in his military uniform, he stopped at the local draft office in The Times building to tell his experiences. "At the present time, the camp is under quarantine for measles. I previously had the disease, so I secured a doctor's permit to come home." He had high praise for the camp, officers and food.
A detachment of the motorized infantry from Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, is scheduled to pass through Mentone and Etna Green on State Road 19 on Saturday, January 4, en route to Camp Custer, Mich. Carl Bibler, of Warsaw, will be a member of the detachment on the trip.
