10 Years

Major Brian M. Simmons, son of Roger and Deborah Simmons, Warsaw, was awarded the Bronze Star Oct. 29 for exceptionally meritorious service. He has been in Iraq since January. He was a military advisor to the Iraqi Security Forces, 2nd Motorized Transportation Regiment, being responsible for training, staffing and equipping the unit. During his deployment, he has received other awards.

    Ron Truex had been training for months for his solo flight with the Warsaw Flying Club, founded by Jon Fussle in February 2004. Strong winds didn't stop him. Instructors Karina Holstad and Dave Fussle watched with family and friends the standard three takeoffs and landings in his Piper Archer airplane.

 

25 Years

Lakeview's seventh-grade boys basketball team beat Pierre Moran, 34-31, Monday night, Dec. 3. Matt Taylor scored 16 points and had 16 rebounds. Adam Kabala hit a pair of free throws late to steal the victory. The team is now 4-2.

    Lakeland Christian Academy beat Lakeview, 61-55, Saturday, Dec. 1. Jay Mathison had 18 rebounds and five assists, while Matt Smith had 12 rebounds. LCA is now 1-0. The junior varsity team also won, 45-32. Brant Burns scored 14 points; David James had 10.

    For the second year in a row, the town of Winona Lake will have an outdoor Christmas decoration contest. Coordinator Amy Cline said she helped start the contest as a neighborhood effort on the island three years ago and expanded the event.

 

50 Years

Junior Honor Society members recognized Nov. 11 at the Freshman High School: Carol Nichols, Andrea Potter, Micki Finkenbiner, Ruth Brumfield, Vonnie Sumpter, Tim Olson, John Knisely, Cathy Simpson, Pat McIlroy, Steve Clingenpeel, James Caywood, Jeff Strayer and Steve Barker.

    Janlyn Anderson was crowned North Webster High School's Basketball Queen for 1965-66 at the game between Webster and Claypool last night, Nov. 12. Princesses are Carla Ryan, Pat Bisig and Donelle Strand.

    Mrs. Max Myers pinned the coveted Eagle Scout Award on her son, Charles, following the presentation of the award by former Indiana Governor Henry Schricker at the First United Church of Christ in Bourbon. Clayton Gottschalk is Scoutmaster of Troop 254.

 

75 Years

The play "Footloose" was chosen by the speech class of the Nappanee High School and will be given Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the Nappanee Community Building. The teacher, Miss Orthello Stephen, is the director. The cast includes: William Muntz, Jeanne Alice Mishler, Bennie Sue Blackburn, LaMar Clouse, Phyllis and Robert Stump, Tom Wegmiller, Wilma Hamman, Phyllis and Howard Kurtz, Max Weaver, Carolyn Gentzhorn, Robert Yarian and Arlene Eigler.
