North Manchester Public Library earned high rankings in both national and state levels on a national library index. Hennen’s American Public Library Rating Index ranked North Manchester Public Library second in the state in the same population category and 11th among 1,467 libraries nationwide. North Manchester Public Library patrons checked out a record number of materials last year. More than 143,000 items, or about 49 items per hour, were on loan in 2002.

A common ring of volunteerism sounded clearly as Warsaw’s prestigious Man and Woman of the Year recipients were named recently at the Shrine Building. Honorees for 1987 were John Frederich and Edith E. Blessing. Frederich is a retired general manager of Creighton Bros. and Blessing is manager of regulatory affairs at Zimmer Inc. The awards were presented during the 76th annual Greater Warsaw Chamber of Commerce banquet, which was attended by 231 people.

Miss Phyllis Jean Sheetz, of Warsaw, and Miss Pamelia Ann Hammer, are among the 98 Indiana University School of Nursing students to be awarded their nurse’s caps in ceremonies at the I.U. Medical Center at Indianapolis. Phyllis Jean is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge Monroe Sheetz, Warsaw, and Miss Hammer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zenna Lionel Hammer, of Mentone.

A 22-year-old Ford provided Robert and Vernon, sons of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Kinney, of near Morris Chapel, with a 5,000 mile auto trip through Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Florida. They left Warsaw Nov. 4, completed the 5,000-mile circle and arrived back at the old home Jan. 11. They visited many historic places.
