    The Leesburg Elementary Spell Bowl team took first place in Division 2 of the Indiana Academic Competition for Excellence Nov. 21 at Goshen Middle School. Anna Cornell earned a perfect score in the competition, which has been sponsored by IACE for five years. Other team members are Jaclyn Abrams, Sarah Flinn, Jessica Thorndike, Baxter Burnworth, Derek Weaver, Josh Folk, Chelsy Hershberger, Candice Kissane, Thomas Burnworth and Brittany Rowe.

    Lake City Bank employees hosted a retirement party in honor of Bruce Wright, who served as president of the bank from 1967-80, and vice chairman of the board and chief executive officer from 1980-82. Wright and his wife, Florine, will spend the winter in Florida and return home to Warsaw in spring. The retiring bank official says he plans to do some bass fishing and refinish antique furniture.

    Mrs. Adrian Coplen, of 719 E. Fort Wayne St., is convinced that Friday the 13th is not "her day."

Arriving home from her duties as deputy clerk Thursday afternoon Mrs. Coplen found her house full of smoke and fumes. This morning there was no heat in the house. To top it off, when she tried to cook breakfast, the stove wouldn't respond.

    Harriet McCarter last week completed a nurse's training course at the Methodist Hospital in Fort Wayne and is now making her home with her parents in Milford.
