10 Years
Several artists have renovated a building in Pickwick Square, behind the gazebo in Syracuse, for a workshop and gallery. A ribbon-cutting and open house is planned for The Creative Fish on Saturday, Jan. 21. The board of directors-Tammy Kratzer, Mary Gerard, Kathy Cone, Cindy Bryan, Kathy Boyts and Lynn Allegret-met in a pottery class offered at Wawasee High School. The women talked afterward about getting together to create things outside the classroom, "where we could work, talk and have fun." The Fish refers to the water and the Creative refers to the spirit of the endeavor.
25 Years
New board members for Combined Community Services: Jay Rigdon, Sister Ann Kihslinger and Dennis Wilson.
Kosciusko County assessor Avis Gunter was sworn in as first vice president of the Association of Indiana Counties by Gov. Evan Bayh. She was elected by the board of directors to serve in 1991. The AIC was established in 1957 for the betterment of county government. Gunter had previously served as second vice president.
Bourbon clerk-treasurer Lucille Peckham was named "Citizen of the Year" Tuesday, Jan. 15, by the town council. The proclamation mentioned her service as clerk for seven years, as well as previous service as assistant clerk and member of the park board. She also worked on the Bourbon Summerfest and other community activities.
50 Years
James F. Hartle, president of Zimmer Manufacturing Co., congratulates Finley Gilworth on his 25 years of service with the company. Receiving watches for 20 years were Monroe Moore, Mrs. Mary Wolford, Reuben Clover and Leonard Hoffhien. Service awards for 15 years were Grace Eherenman and Ruth Hess; Max Fawley, James Priser, James Keeton, Kenneth Rice, Harold Nash, Donald Stiver, 10. More than 20 years of service: Earl Stockmeyer, 38; Harry Circle, 36; James Hartle, 33; Everett Shoemaker, Merlin Long, William Hill, 28; Roy Shand, Robert Delp, Wesley Hay, Harold Neer, Dorothy Latta, 24; Clarence Deerwester, Elmer Ervin, Jesse Rice, Charles Ward, 23.
75 Years
Walter Fenstermaker, basketball coach at Mentone High School for the past five years, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 7, 1941. Born near Mentone, son of John and Pearl Fenstermaker, he was a basketball star at Mentone High School. Under his direction, the Bulldogs won the sectional championship in 1939 by downing Milford in the finals 34-24. The team came back the following year to whip Beaver Dam for the title, 20 to 11. He served as coach of the Junior American Legion baseball team in Kosciusko County, capturing the district crown in 1939 and went into the state semi-finals before being eliminated by East Chicago.
