Girl Scouts in Kosciusko County were part of a four-county joint venture to collect usable items and clothing for area Goodwill stores. Overall, 850 girls in 67 troops from Elkhart, Whitley, Noble and Kosciusko participated.
The combined Lakeview and Edgewood Middle School bands and choirs honored the 50th anniversary of Veterans Day. Edgewood Principal JoElla Smyth gave the welcome, followed by the posting of colors and the National Anthem. Lakeview Principal Tom Kline spoke about courage.
More than 300 students performed in the concert.

Fellow employees, business associates and the family of Bette Cowen were guests at a retirement dinner hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Richard L. Carman Oct. 27 at the ViewPoint Restaurant. She retired from the optometrist office after 14 years.
She wants to pursue her hobbies of knitting, traveling, and assisting husband, Lloyd, with his award-winning rose garden.
Pat Glover, Warsaw, will mark her 30th year with United Telephone of Indiana this month. She began employment in 1958 as an operator.

Warsaw’s “elder statesman,” City Judge Allan S. Widaman, recalled the excitement of elections at the turn of the century. In the 1900s there would be a bicycle parade and a huge log burning the night before on the courthouse lawn where every man’s hat within reaching distance would be thrown into the fire. “A Civil War cannon would be shot off. One night some men removed the cannon and it was dropped into the middle of Center Lake and has never been found,” he said. His father was a member of the delegation to Canton, Ohio to inform William McKinley of his election as President of the United States in 1896.

The new Knight Drug Company, 110 S. Buffalo Street, occupying the former Leiter Drug Store site, opens tomorrow morning for a three-day sale. The store is owned and operated by Herbert Knight, formerly of Kendallville, who has been in the drug business for the past 35 years. The store, remodeled and redecorated with new fixtures, will operate under the famous Walgreen system.
