Fire broke out about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Leesburg Lumber Co., starting in the main office and quickly spreading through a woodworking shop and storage building. Firemen were hampered by a strong wind and a lack of water after the supply from the town's cisterns became depleted. Tanker trucks from Larwill, Pierceton, Mentone and Burket were summoned to transport water from a gravel pit at the south edge of Leesburg. Fire equipment from all over the county joined in battling the blaze. Winona Lake Fire Chief, Bruce Howe, gave aid to Milford fireman, R.E. Slabaugh, after he was overcome by the heat and smoke. Two Leesburg firemen were treated at Murphy Medical Center. Flames, shooting high into the sky, drew many spectators; police sealed off the town.
