Kelly H. Holbrook and  Justin D. Weaver were among 16 students in the United States to be selected by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. to receive scholarships given by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. to children of its employees. The renewable four-year scholarships range from $2,000 to $4,000, depending on financial need. Holbrook, a student at Warsaw Community High School, is the daughter of Stephen Holbrook.

The Warsaw Middle School finished first in an eight-county region and 10th in the state out of 221 schools entered in the Indiana Math League Contest held recently. Those participating were WMS seventh-graders Dan Green, Megan Drake and Rob Musgrave. Also, Chuck Brindle and Dan Zink. Brindle was first in the regional contest and 21st in the state contest, while Green was fourth in the regional.

Ford Chinworth, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Chinworth, received the coveted Andrews Arion Foundation Award as the outstanding Warsaw High School band member. The donor, Charles Andrews, local plumbing and heating contractor, presented the award. Jim Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Miller, received the director’s baton as the senior band student who did the most in promoting the band program the past school year. Milton Tatter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Tatter, was named student director, having been elected by the other bandsmen and approved by Director Bazil O’Reilley.

When a tractor he was driving refused to stop, the machine plowed completely through the side of a tool-shed building recently at the Warsaw Country Club. The side of the building was torn away and E.A. Robertson, golf course caretaker, escaped injury although timbers fell about him. Robertson was putting the tractor, used to pull mowers, into the building for night storage.
