Red Cross supports guard effort

By Staff Report-

The American Red Cross and the Armed Forces Emergency Services are marshalling resources nationwide and around the world to assist members of the military and their families as troops prepare for new assignments. The Kosciusko County chapter of the ARC is playing a very active role in supporting local members.

Serving active-duty military personnel and their families for more than a century, the Red Cross recently enhanced its outreach to the National Guard and Reserves.

"Every day, the Red Cross carries the joyful news of a birth or the sad news of a death or illness of a family member to servicemen and -women. We understand how important it is for military families to be in contact with each other," said Carol Stanton, director of program services. "The long separations and stressful situations that occur when a service member deploys often place a serious emotional strain on families.

"The Red Cross links military personnel and their families through services which include confidential counseling, as well as neutral, impartial assistance when and where needed, particularly during times of crisis at home."

National Guard and Reserve members and their families receive the same Red Cross emergency services as full-time active duty personnel. The Red Cross keeps them in touch with their families, verifies emergency leave information, secures emergency financial assistance and helps families through the separation period.

The organization requires specific information to contact military personnel quickly. This includes the person's full name, Social Security number, address where deployed and home base unit. For more information, call the Kosciusko County chapter of the American Red Cross at 267-5244 or 888-267-5244. [[In-content Ad]]
