Chapter volunteer awards were presented to:

Jeff Smith, Youth Volunteer, who helps in a variety of roles, "jumping in" to assist as needed.

Louise Peffley, Blood Services Volunteer, who has served the chapter for nine years. She and her late husband, David, worked together as chapter volunteers for many years.

Ann Sweet, Disaster Services Volunteer, plays many roles, including serving on the board of directors, coordinating and enabling the donation of a vehicle to the chapter, and representing the chapter at various events. She regularly participates in disaster action team activities and has volunteered to participate in national disaster assignments on several occasions.

Carol Biehold, Health and Safety Volunteer, is a relatively new volunteer in the local chapter, but has served as a volunteer and instructor in other chapters. She demonstrates a commitment to helping others learn about administering first aid, CPR and AED skills.

Jay Carlson, Armed Forces Emergency Services Volunteer, has become skilled in working in the AFES program, which supports active duty military, retirees and their families with emergency messaging service, as well as financial assistance. The local chapter maintains the program with local volunteers rather than outsourcing the activity as many chapters have done.

Randy Schmucker, Volunteer of the Year, works in many different areas of the chapter, including regularly working with the disaster program. He is a certified disaster course instructor and has responded to national disaster assignments in Indiana and around the country, working in shelters and assisting with mass care.

Lewis Rule, Chapter Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, was described as a "scholar and a gentleman." He has worked in the blood services program for more than 20 years, and worked side-by-side with his wife, Martha, who also was a volunteer for many years. He recently celebrated his 91st birthday and plans to retire as a volunteer.

Others recognized included: Ed Rock, Al Disbro, K-21 Foundation, Kosciusko County Community Foundation, and area fire departments, represented by Warsaw Fire Chief Mike Wilson and Atwood Fire Chief Mike Harmon.

Wilson thanked the group for the support they received from the Red Cross and their volunteers. "We couldn't do it (without the Red Cross). It takes a load off our shoulders," he said.

Cathy Huffman, chapter solutions manager for northern Indiana, works with 17 chapters in 38 counties. She said, "The Kosciusko County Chapter is a solid, strong organization."

During the business meeting, Mike Suhaney, board secretary, reviewed the minutes of last year's meeting, and Burton Ramsey, board treasurer, reviewed the financial report for 2006.

The following officers were elected for the upcoming year: Kevin Weaver, chairman; Peggy Lieffring, vice chairman; Mike Suhany, secretary; and Burton Ramsey, treasurer. Other board members include: Julie Bowers, David Colquitt, DeBatty, Laura Kaufman, Gretchen Moore, Debra Musser, Karen Nelson, Sandra Parra, Sweet, Warren and Debbie Yingling.

The meeting closed with recognition of the chapter staff: Larry E. Peppel, executive director; Carol Stanton, director of program services; Ivana Goodrich, administrative assistant; Danny Warrick, disaster action team chair; and Bree Griffith, instructor trainer.
