The 2007 Red Ball Committee Wednesday kicked off plans for this year's ball, scheduled March 10 at Tippecanoe Country Club, which is during National Red Cross Month.

Co-chairs for the event are Fran and Larry Allen, Cheryl and David Blakemore, Kristin and Matt Elliott and Carol Lyn and Dean Jansen.

The kick-off was sponsored by Zimmer and hosted at their corporate headquarters, downtown Warsaw. Kristin Elliott welcomed the group and recognized Sylvia Aguirre, a committee member employed by Zimmer, who arranged the event.

The theme for the ball will be "Walk the Red Carpet." Proceeds from the ball go to the local chapter of the Red Cross. In the past six years of Red Balls, The Red Cross has received net proceeds of $210,677, for an average of $35,113 per year. Larry Peppel, executive director of the local chapter, said, "This is a very significant part of our chapter revenue."

Elliott said, "Everyone is touched in one way or another by the Red Cross."

Peppel thanked the committee members and co-chairs for all they do to plan the Red Ball. He introduced Jill DeBatty, chairman of the board of directors of the local Red Cross chapter.

Peppel reviewed the highlights of the Annual Report for fiscal year 2006, which ended June 30. He also reported there were six fires in the county in November. The Red Cross provides assistance to the families not covered by insurance and supports the fire departments during such disasters. He said, "We give them a place to stay, provide food, basic clothing and other interim needs."

The Red Cross has hosted 60 blood mobiles in Kosciusko County in the past year. Nationally, The Red Cross provides 40 to 45 percent of the blood supply.

Other services provided by the local chapter include life-saving programs, public education programs and message service to the families of soldiers.

One of the highlights of this year's ball will be a special cake. DeBatty's family has been in the bakery business in Muncie for many years, and the cake will be a "Concannon's family recipe" for a cream cake decorated in a Hollywood theme. Pieces of the cake will be sold for donations, and one of the pieces will be a prize piece. The person who purchases that piece of cake will win the prize.

Sue and Bill Allen, Allen's Designs, will continue their tradition of providing a unique piece of jewelry for the auction.

Elliott said, "We'll be implementing a 'giving room' this year, where people who weren't able to purchase an auction item can just give a donation."

For attire, Elliot said, "'Anything goes' as far as clothes at this year's ball - dress as your favorite actor or actress, favorite movie or TV character or theme."

The band will be The Marlin Brothers, of southern Indiana, who have been well-known for 25 years as being able to provide a wide variety of music.

Invitations will be mailed Jan. 16. Anyone wanting to receive an invitation or whose address has changed since last year, may call the Red Cross, 574-267-5244, to update the list for invitations. Those not attending the Ball can donate by returning a contribution with the RSVP or may donate directly to the Red Cross. All direct donations should be earmarked to "Walk the Red Carpet."

As in the past, five patron levels will be specially recognized: $5,000, Oscar; $3,000, Emmy; $2,000, Grammy; $1,000, Golden Globe; and $500, People's Choice. Each level will be designated by special recognition in the program and as stage ads. For more information on the levels and what is included with each, call the Red Cross. Donations of other amounts also will be accepted. Make all checks payable to American Red Cross Red Ball 2007, 320 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw, IN 46580.
