Raymond L. Ray Smith, 70, of Leesburg, died peacefully in his residence at 3:30 a.m. Jan. 2, 2009.

He was born May 2, 1938, in Rochester, to Henry Hank and Bessie McClain Grubbs Smith. On Oct. 15, 1983, in Pulaski, he married Judy A. Scheffer, who survives. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in October.

Living in Kosciusko County for the past 30 years, he was a machine operator at Dana Corp. for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Rochester Eagles 852 and North Webster American Legion Post 253. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Aug. 30, 1956. He received the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged on Aug. 29, 1960, to the Naval Reserve until Aug. 29, 1962.

Also surviving are two sons, Mike (and spouse Brenda) Smith, Goshen, and Jesse (and spouse Rhonda) Bitterling, Star City; three daughters: Kendra Smith, Goshen; Michelle Hand, Syracuse; and Jamie (and spouse Dan) Wenzler, Star City; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and is now with his beloved dog, Chelsey.

Services were at 5 p.m. Sunday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Pastor Steve Peters of First Baptist Church, Warsaw, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
