Ralph W. Thornburg, 91, Syracuse, died at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 20, 2009, in his residence.

He was born April 4, 1917, in Syracuse, to Ralph E. and Blanche White Thornburg. On Sept. 12, 1940, he married Marjorie E. Slabaugh, who died in 1987. On May 28, 1988, he married Hulda M. Ramsey Hursh, who survives.

He was a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area. He was a 1935 Syracuse High School, graduated and attended Purdue University and Butler University in 1939 with a degree in pharmacy. He formerly owned and operated Thornburg Drugs in Syracuse, North Webster, Warsaw, Columbia City, Nappanee and South Bend from 1941 to 1985.

He was a member of the St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Syracuse, and was a charter member of the Syracuse Lion's Club. He was also a past member of the Syracuse/Wawasee Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Retail Druggists, the National Association of Chain Drugstores, the Indiana Federated Council of Healthcare Facilities, the Indiana Pharmacy Association, served as national chairman of the American Pharmaceutical Association and was board member and president of the Kosciusko Community Hospital.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jill Thornburg, Thornton, Colo., and Jenny Rowland, Syracuse; two sons, Dr. John (and spouse Trena) Thornburg, Okoms, Mich., and Tom (and spouse Cyndi) Thornburg, Syracuse; two stepdaughters, Anita (and spouse William) Cast, Fort Wayne, and Lonnie (and spouse Cy) Zeichner, University Park, Fla.; a stepson, Stanley Hursh, Syracuse; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Mark Eastway officiating. Burial has taken place at Syracuse Cemetery.

Calling is one hour prior to the service.

Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse, is in charge of the arrangements.
