Rain Does Not Stop Warsaw In NLC Golf

MIDDLEBURY - Of all the things Warsaw boys golf coach Bob Turner wanted to see before Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference Tournament, rain was at the bottom of the list.

Rain makes golf courses more difficult to play, closing the gap between good teams and bad teams by evening the field.

But it rained Friday night and Saturday morning.

"I told the coaches I thought 330 would win because of the 1-1/2 inches of rain," Turner said. "It was extremely wet with water standing in the fairways."

Indeed, rain raised the scores, but Warsaw still escaped with the win in the 18-hole match at Spring Meadow Farm Golf Course.

Warsaw shot 327 to finish first and was followed by Wawasee (329), NorthWood (329), Goshen (332), Plymouth (347), Concord (352) and Northridge (354).

NorthWood's Chet Walters won medalist honors with a 78.

The tournament sealed first place in the NLC for the Tigers, who went 16-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference during the regular season. The undefeated season is Warsaw's first since 1988, when the Tigers went 20-0 and were ranked No. 1 in the state.

The Tigers won their third straight and eighth overall NLC title under Turner, who won his sixth NLC Coach of the Year award.

Aaron Turner and Justin Howell each shot an 81 for Warsaw. Ryan Slone shot 82, Adam Johnson 83 and Jason Henthorn 91.

After the scores on the first nine holes rolled in, Goshen, Warsaw and Wawasee shared first place with scores of 162. But Warsaw's 165 on the back nine bettered Goshen and Wawasee to give the Tigers their title.

In recent years, Warsaw has won the NLC but stumbled at least a couple of times with subpar performances during the regular season.

Not the 1999 team.

"We have a lot of athletes, so they're used to the tough situations," Bob Turner said. "That's one of the big differences."

Before the season, Bob Turner predicted his team needed one month to start rolling because of several new varsity golfers. Asked if his team clicked earlier than expected or if he was trying to take pressure off his team, Bob Turner said, "It was a combination. I didn't want to put pressure on them, because a lot of these kids have never been tested at the varsity level.

"I wanted to ease them into the situation. With the exception of Justin, we don't have any lights-out par shooters, but we're very deep."

Ryan Skaggs, Scott White and Kyle Lundy each shot an 82 for Wawasee.
