The addition, property owner Pat Knott told the board, will be an 80-foot-long railcar. Knott said the car, a passenger car made in 1938 or 1939, has been restored inside and out and, after it arrives at the Depot, will be available for the public to rent as a location for meetings and banquets.[[In-content Ad]]"It'll become a destination, I think," said Knott.
Before the railcar can be brought to the Depot, Knott must obtain a variance from the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission to allow Knott to build closer to the road than county ordinance allows, to add the required stairs and wheelchair access to the car. Pierceton Council President Jerry Kreger told the board he is in favor of supporting Knott's request for the variance.
"If you've been to the Depot and seen what she and her son have done up there, it's amazing," Kreger said.
The town's letter of support will be sent to the plan commission in advance of the Feb. 12 hearing when Knott's request will be heard.
In other news, the council also approved a resolution allowing the town to use economic development income tax funds to pay off a water system bond and establishing a plan for the use of EDIT funds over the next several years. The bond was originally issued in the 1980s for upgrades to the town's water system.
Town Attorney Jim Wallmer said the bond payoff will total about $195,000, and paying off the bond early will save the town money.
