Raiders Rout Wawasee Baseball Team

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

MIDDLEBURY – Wawasee’s Drew Anderson drilled the second pitch of the game from Northridge’s Andy Ross into the left field corner for a double.
He scored on a two-out single by Harrison Shortill, but that was basically the highlight of the night for the Warriors in a 14-2, five-inning loss to the Raiders Wednesday.
After Shortill’s single, Ross retired the last 10 hitters he faced. He didn’t return to the mound after the Raiders scored nine runs in the fourth. Ross gave up just the one run, two hits and struck out three in getting the win.
“(Ross) threw well. I thought we could have got to him a little earlier,” Wawasee head coach Brent Doty said.  “We squandered a good opportunity (for a bigger inning) with the leadoff double. But yeah, he threw well, and that’s about all you can say about him.”
Northridge answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first off Andrew Wright, who had to grind through his three innings of work. The Raiders had five hits, and coaxed four walks from Wright in scoring two more runs in the second and one more in the third, but it could have been worse.
In the fourth, it did get worse.
Bailey Hershberger struggled mightily with his control as well, walking the first three hitters he faced and four in the inning. Nine of the first 10 batters in the inning scored to bring the run rule into play.
The one bit of good news for Wawasee pitching: Northridge had only one extra base hit, a leadoff double by Grant Miller in the bottom of the first.
Thanks in part to rainouts, Wawasee finds itself in the midst of an eight-games-in-nine-days stretch. Coming off a tough 3-2, 12-inning loss to NorthWood on Tuesday night, Doty said he’s addressed his team about not just getting through the schedule, but thriving in it.
“I talked to the guys (Tuesday) night after the 12-inning loss. We talked about how it’s tough to bounce back after a tough loss, and you have to make a decision about what you’re going to do the next day,” Doty said. “We came out and showed what we’re going to do. Now we have to take it for what it is, learn from it and go on.”
The stretch continues when the Warriors travel to Elkhart Memorial this afternoon, in a game originally scheduled for May 8.
