Raiders Roll Over Tigers
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Northridge's boys swim team entered Saturday's meet rolling toward its third straight Northern Lakes Conference title.
The Raiders faced the one team - Warsaw - with the best chance of knocking them off. Northridge entered 7-1, while Warsaw was 7-0.
But Northridge proved why it has won two titles in a row is in line for its third. Northridge's boys swim team beat Warsaw 108-78, while Northridge's girls swim team beat Warsaw 110-76.
The Northridge boys improve to 6-0 in the NLC, while the Warsaw boys drop to 5-1 in the NLC.
"We would have had to swim our best to win," Warsaw coach Chris LaLonde said, "and even if we did, I had the meet scored 20 points different."
The Northridge girls up their record to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the NLC, while the Warsaw girls fall to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the NLC.
"I knew Northridge was a lot stronger in quite a few events," Warsaw girls coach Terry Aukeman said. "It was just a matter of how close we could keep it."
The Northridge boys have on regular season NLC dual meet left. Then Warsaw and other conference schools will have another crack at Northridge at the NLC Tournament.
Diving did Warsaw's girls team in. With Northridge holding a 34-28 lead after four events, Tasha Wiseman won the diving competition with a score of 203.25, while teammates Laura Coddens took second and Cassie Haiden fourth.
When diving ended, Northridge led 46-32.
Northridge discouraged any notion Warsaw had of getting back in the meet by quickly going for the kill. Two events later, Mandy Hanje placed first (58.74 seconds), Synda Clements second and Tenile Sheely fourth in the 100 freestyle to put the Raiders up 67-43 with five events left.
Hillary Barlow won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.21 for Warsaw's lone first place.
"What really got us were the relays," Aukeman said. "I thought we could win one or two, but we didn't win any, and all three relay teams had their best times of the year.
"Northridge swam really well."
The boys meet nearly mimicked the girls meet, except Northridge widened the lead one event after diving, the 100 butterfly.
Northridge, holding a 44-34 lead, went ahead 56-38 after Taylor Williamson took first (:56.85), Evan Troyer second and Jonathon Ong fourth in the 100 butterfly. Two events later, Northridge delivered the kill.
Scott Williamson placed first (5:14.14) and Adam Miller second in the 500 freestyle to take a commanding 74-52 lead with four events left.
Warsaw finished with two first places. Dex Anglin won the diving competition with a score of 183.20, and Ryan Munsch, Joe Clevenger, Cory Gackenheimer and Brett Moore won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.24.
LaLonde thought the Northridge boys set approximately 15 season-best times at the meet, but Northridge swim coach Joe Keller claimed that wasn't the case.
"I know the Warsaw coaches said something like that to me" he said, "but we actually swam our best meet two days before on Thursday [in a 114-72 win] against Wawasee. We swam well at this meet, but we didn't swim quite as well as we did against Wawasee. We had five individual best times against Warsaw."
Warsaw's girls team matched Northridge's depth as the Raiders took two of the three spots in six events, as did the Tigers. Where Warsaw did not match
Northridge was at the front. Northridge won 11 of the 12 events.
Northridge's boys team took two of the top three places in eight of 12 events and finished first in 10.
Warsaw swims a rescheduled meet at 4:45 p.m. today at Plymouth.
