NAPPANEE - The game between Northwood and Northridge was a rematch of the Goshen Holiday Tournament. That night Northwood came out on top 45-43.

Northridge turned the table and handed the Panthers a 58-49 loss Friday night.

The Raiders jumped out to a seven-point lead to start the game. Their stingy defense and Northwood's sloppy play kept the Panthers from scoring until 2:48 in the first quarter when Panther forward Bobby Brown hit 1 of 2 free throws.

The Panthers played Northridge even for the rest of the quarter and trailed 11-5 .

Northwood came out in the second quarter and looked as if they would take over the game.

Led by Brown and Aaron Huber, who led the Panther surge with 11 and 8 points respectively, Northwood posted 23 points in the second quarter to take the halftime lead 28-27. The Panthers led despite shooting less than 40 percent from the field and 4 of 11 from the charity stripe.

NorthWood continued its poor shooting in the second half as Northridge tightened its defense and continued to shoot well from the field.

The Raiders shot 61 percent for the game and their aggresiveness on offense caused Northwood to commit 19 personal fouls. Charlie Roeder and Jake Yoder both fouled out for the Panthers.

Even though Northwood was shooting poor from the field, the Panthers trailed only 40-37 through three quarters.

Northridge started to pull away early in the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run. Northwood was able to stick around however.

The Raiders were up by as many as 12 points in the final period but the Panthers were able to hit shots at key times.

A Darin Nunemaker three-pointer and a couple of baskets by Brown cut the lead to as low as five. Missed free throws and sloppy play were the eventual downfall of the Panthers.

"We were ugly tonight," Northwood head coach Dan Gunn said. "I thought that in the second quarter we picked things up but then we went back to playing like we did in the first quarter."

Several missed free throws by Northwood down the strech shut the door on a late comeback. The Panthers were forced to foul Northridge, and the Panthers hit on their free throws. They went to the free-throw line 18 times and connected on 13 of them in the second half.

"Basketball is a game where you can have a great gameplan but if you aren't making your shots, (the gameplan) is worthless" Gunn said. "We had good defensive pressure and our trap hurt them. But we just ran out of gas in the second half."

Northwood is now 5-3 and 1-1 in the NLC. Northwood hosts conference rival Warsaw on Friday night. [[In-content Ad]]
