Raider Wrestlers Win NLC Title

SYRACUSE - At Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference Tournament, Northridge's wrestling team placed first, while NorthWood took second place by edging Warsaw by a half point.
Wawasee placed fifth.
Warsaw's Kris Hueber (215 pounds) and Wawasee's Josh Roa (145) earned individual championships.
Northridge's Mike Wickersham was recognized as Coach of the Year as his Raiders sealed sole possession of the overall championship by winning the tournament and going undefeated in conference dual competition.
Four Northridge Raider wrestlers walked away champions, while NorthWood and Plymouth each boasted three champions and Elkhart Memorial two.
The NLC All-Conference team comprises the individual winners at the tournament with three additional outstanding wrestlers being given at-large recognition. Wrestlers named to the at-large list were Warsaw's Richard Wolfe (171), Plymouth's Mike Palbykin (215) and Northridge's Anton Lemon (103).
In the final round of competition, there were also consolation matches for third place and wrestle-offs for fifth place. Warsaw and Wawasee each had 12 of 14 reach final round matches.
Championship matches
Roa (145) was Wawasee's lone champion. In round one he beat Northridge's Robert Kindel 7-2. In the semifinal Roa racked up an 11-0 major decision over Plymouth's Keegan Campbell. Roa's victory in the final round was a 12-6 decision over Elkhart Memorial's Tom Iannarelli.
Hueber (215) was the only champion for the Tigers. Hueber crunched his way to the championship round with a 1:12 pin of NorthWood's David Miller, and in the semi-final, he squashed Northridge's Nathan Hershberger in 59 seconds. The championship came to Hueber after a serious tussle with Plymouth's Mark Palbykin.
In their regular season meeting, Hueber won by a 10-4 margin and in the tournament, Hueber scored two takedowns and an escaped with a 5-0 victory, giving him his third straight NLC title.
Warsaw's Anthony Boley (119) became runner-up after he lost to Goshen's Tom Skinner. Wawasee's Josh DeGood (125) became runner-up when he lost to NorthWood's Dillon Whitacre. Both of these matches were decided by a 5-2 score.
After a scoring a 14-4 major decision in round one and a 1:27 fall in round two, Warsaw's John Milton (140) faced Elkhart Memorial's Grant Woodka. Milton fought hard but was only able to manage a couple of escapes before being pinned at 3:22 to earn runner-up honors.
Wolfe (171) powered his way to the finals with a 1:05 pin in round one and 20-5 tech fall in round two. In the finals Wolfe faced Northridge's Noah Hoopingarner. In their regular season meeting, Wolfe was beaten in a 16-7 major decision. In the NLC finals, Wolfe scored the opening takedown, but Hoopingarner came back to take a 8-5 victory and Wolfe went home as runner-up.
Consolation matches
At 103 pounds, Wawasee's Eric Vallejo took third place, defeating NorthWood's Adam Jenkins in an 11-3 major decision.
Warsaw's Robert Raymer scored a fall in 50 seconds to take fifth place.
Wawasee's Deme Vallejo (112) earned third place by defeating Plymouth's Brandon Shanks, while Phil Anuta settled for sixth place.
Wawasee's Simon Hernandez (119) took fourth place after losing 6-0 to Northridge's David Blea.
Warsaw's Tanner Connealy (125) took third when he smashed Plymouth's Alex Uceny in 1:44 after scoring three solid takedowns.
A Warrior and a Tiger met head to head in a consolation match at 130 pounds. Warsaw's Kyle Boley came out the winner when he pinned Trevor Brown in 1:27.
At 135 pounds, the Warriors' Mike Hanlin was awarded fourth place after a 9-6 loss to NorthWood's Brandon Garner, while the Tigers' Adam Bott took fifth place by pinning Goshen's Frank Guzman in 1:42.
Wawasee's German Vallejo (140) earned third place in a 4-3 decision over NorthWood's Josh Snyder.
Warsaw freshman Brandon Cordell (145) had to settle for fourth place after a tough loss to NorthWood's Josh Metzler. Cordell put forth "good effort" according to Tiger coach Tony Boley. Cordell was up 4-0 in the second period before Metzler came powering back late in the second and then dominated in the third for the 10-6 win.
Wawasee's Grant Gibson (152) took fourth place after losing to Northridge's Chris Harrell 8-6.
Warsaw's Nate Milton (160) took third place in a 3-1 victory over NorthWood's E.J. Yehl, while Tim Popenfoose (171), Nick Hanlin (189) and Sam Watkins (275) placed in the consolation round for Wawasee.
Warsaw's David Ferguson gritted out a 6-0 victory over Elkhart Memorial's Sam Mayo to earn third place.
Warsaw finishes the NLC season 6-1 and places second overall after its third-place finish in the tournament. The Tigers complete the season with 13-3 overall dual record. Warsaw hosts a sectional on Saturday.
Wawasee, which finished seventh in the NLC after combining its fifth-place tournament finish and 1-6 conference record, competes in the East Noble Sectional at 9 a.m. Saturday.
