NORTH MANCHESTER – R. Lowell Yohe, 89, North Manchester, died at 7:05 p.m. Jan. 28, 2014, in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.
He was born April 2, 1924, in Darke County, Ohio, to Herbert and Frances Kress Yohe. On June 8, 1947, he married Martha L. Stinebaugh, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and commodities broker with the Chicago Board of Trade. He was a member of Manchester Church of the Brethren.
He was the oldest of one brother and one sister. His parents were farmers and that is what he always wanted to do, and did. He had a passion for farming and owned and operated a farm for 34 years. In 1942 he graduated from high school in Monroe Township, Ohio. He went to Ohio State for 1-1/2 years before being drafted in World War II. He was in civilian public service for three years. During some of those years he established a commodities business in Warsaw, and eventually they moved to Warsaw and went into that business full time until his retirement.
He went on a People to People tour with other farmers to Europe where they were in seven different countries. He was on the board of Black Lake Lodge, a farm where boys with special problems came from Fort Wayne to learn about living together and farming. He received special recognition for 22 years in that work. He and Martha moved to Timbercrest in 1993. He enjoyed spending time at his computer and watching baseball and basketball on TV. He was a ham radio operator since 1962, and a member of the American Radio Relay League.
Also surviving are his two sons, Richard Yohe, South Whitley, and Pat (and spouse Faye) Yohe, Ottawa, Ohio; a daughter, Rebecca Brock, Fort Wayne; a sister, Yula Jean Hillis, Arcanum, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wendel Yohe, and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 9 at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East St., North Manchester, with Pastor Karen Eberly officiating. Burial is in Manchester Church of the Brethren Memorial Garden, North Manchester.
Calling is one hour prior to services Feb. 9 at the chapel.
