This year, the competition is going electronic.
Quiz Bowl co-chair Steve Yeager said the Quiz Bowl for many years was done manually. Teams marked their answers down on paper, and scores were counted by hand.[[In-content Ad]]For the Quiz Bowl Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Warsaw Community High School Tiger Den, the Esther Pfleiderer Trust paid for Renaissance® electronic responders for the Quiz Bowl. With the responders, teams can enter their answers to questions in real time and immediately find out their results and how well they're doing against other teams. The responders look like television remote controls.
"As we go along, everyone will be able to see the scores," said Barb Smolen, Warsaw Education Foundation executive director.
This year's Quiz Bowl categories includes 2007 Year in Review, The 1980s, Academics and All Things Hoosier. Harvey Miller from WRSW 107.3 again will be the moderator. The winning team gets the coveted traveling trophy. Last year's winning team was Maple Leaf Farm.
There is no admission cost to watch the Quiz Bowl. Free refreshments will be offered.
The annual Quiz Bowl benefits the Warsaw Education Foundation.
WEF provides funding, through community support, to the educators of Warsaw Community Schools for the creation and implementation of enriching academic opportunities for students of WCS. Through the Red Apple Grants program, the Foundation awards grants to Warsaw Community Schools teachers for innovative classroom projects.
The Foundation also provides funds for Ed-Com Expo, annual chess tournaments, NEW Opportunities Workshop for Women, Partners in Education business/school partnership and the Honor an Educator program. The Foundation recognizes academic excellence through programs such as the annual High School Academic Reception and Teacher of the Year community billboards.
JoElla Smyth, Quiz Bowl co-chair, said there will be almost 40 teams this year from area businesses and schools.
To put a team in the Quiz Bowl, a business pays $250 for team entry, $500 to be a Silver Level sponsor or $1,000 to be a Gold Level sponsor.
Gold Sponsors include the Esther Pfleiderer Trust, Lake City Bank, DePuy, Jansen Orthopaedic Clinic and SYM Financial Advisors. Silver Sponsors are Embarq, Explorer Van, Hall & Marose Insurance Agency, Kosciusko Community Hospital and the Times-Union.
The electronic responders that are being used Tuesday in the Quiz Bowl are being used in Warsaw Schools classrooms. The new technology, according to Brenda Wright, WCS technology department, is at Leesburg and Jefferson elementary schools. With 10 sets available, other sets will go to Lincoln and Edgewood Middle School.
