Kelly Warrick wanted to let the Warsaw Fire Department know they were appreciated so she recently presented the department with a quilt she made.

"I just don't think they're recognized enough and I just wanted to say thanks," she said Friday afternoon. Though she said she never has had to have their help, she said she feels secure knowing they are there if she needs them.

"We just think it's a great thing people don't forget about us," said WFD Capt. Kreg Warren of the quilt. "When people do something like that, it's really nice. I'm sure it'll hang here long after most of us are retired."

The quilt Warrick made is titled "American Spirit Quilt" and was designed by Quilt Heritage Foundation President Nancy Kirk. The stars and stripes on the quilt represent American spirit. The cross blocks honor firemen, police officers and American Red Cross and other relief workers. The Tower blocks honor workers in the Twin Towers who died Sept. 11, 2001, after the terrorist attacks. The butterfly blocks are symbols of resurrection and rebirth. The quilt is 3 feet wide by 5 feet long.

Warrick said she started the quilt a couple of years ago, but put it aside when she couldn't quite get it to work. She took it back up and finished it just before Sept. 11 this year.

Warrick, a lifetime Kosciusko County resident, has made quilts for the past 16 years, she said. [[In-content Ad]]
