Quick Start Carries Snider
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Except for the first five minutes of the game, Warsaw's girls basketball played even with Fort Wayne Snider Saturday.
But it was the first five minutes of the game that set the tone.
Snider made good on its first six field goal attempts, while Warsaw turned the ball over in its first two possessions.
With nearly three minutes remaining in the first quarter the Tigers trailed 19-4, then went on to lose 69-54.
The win improves the Panthers to 11-2, while Warsaw falls to 8-6.
After the slow start, the Tigers played Snider even on the scoreboard, 50-50, the rest of the way.
"We achieved one of our team goals, but that's not good enough," said Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst. One of our major goals was to play good basketball. We didn't believe we could win. We saw how tall they were and how high they were ranked and we stood."
Snider, who came in ranked eighth in Class 4A, had five players on its roster at 5-foot-11 or taller. Warsaw had two.
After trailing 24-11 at the end of one quarter of play, Warsaw made a push in the second stanza.
Senior Christy Colt sparked a 7-0 Warsaw run with a free throw at the 7:45 mark. Junior Kara Kesler capped off the run with a field goal with 5:48 remaining in the half, cutting the deficit to 26-19.
Snider led 34-25 at the break.
Warsaw shot 37.5 percent (9-24) from the field and 5 of 13 (38.5 percent) from the charity stripe in the first half. Snider, on the other hand, shot 57.7 percent (15-26) from the field and 2 of 3 at the free throw line.
Warsaw finished the game 12 of 24 from the free throw line.
"This is probably one of the best foul shooting teams I've ever had and we go 12 of 24," said Wienhorst. "We're down nine at the half. If we shoot a normal free throw percentage and make a three, we're only down one."
Not only did the Tigers falter at the free throw line, Wienhorst said he didn't get the productivity from his post players he needed.
"We're not getting scoring in the post," said Wienhorst. "We had so many back-door passes and missed bunnies."
For the game Warsaw got nine points from its starting forwards and center.
Sophomore guard Hillary O'Connell led the Tigers with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Kesler, also a guard, was the only other Tiger in double figures with 10. Starting senior forward Jenna Rooney was 0 of 6 from the field and 0 of 1 at the charity stripe.
Snider was led by 31 points from junior guard Susie Hayden. Hayden, who came in averaging 11 points per game, was 12 of 17 from the field and 3 of 3 at the charity stripe. Seniors Jackie Knight and Sparkle Williams added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Warsaw trailed 51-34 after three quarters and was down by nearly 15 much of the final frame.
Should Warsaw and Snider win their respective schedules, they would play in the same regional.
"I've enjoyed this season," said Wienhorst. "It's been frustrating at times, but I believe in what this team can do. We win the sectional and we get a chance to play Snider in the regional."
Warsaw (8-6) will host Manchester at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
