Two boys basketball teams that haven't played each other in nearly a decade, Warsaw picked up where it left off against visiting Rochester Friday.

Fueled by a strong start and an impressive all-around performance from junior Shaun Cabrera, the Tigers led the entire game en route to a 59-47 win.

"I thought we got off to a great start," said third-year Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose Tigers improved 4-0. "We didn't want to let Rochester get any confidence. I was very happy with the way we started the game. We have a lot of respect for Rochester's team and their players. They're not a typical 2A team."

Of the 12 players on its varsity roster, Rochester lists seven of them at 6-foot-3 or taller, including 6-5 freshman Kory Barnett and 6-8 junior Josh Stoops.

Warsaw, on the other hand, despite being a Class 4A school with nearly 2,000 students compared to Rochester's 550 students, has one player listed at 6-3 and two at 6-4.

In a battle of height against teamwork, Warsaw won out by playing unselfish basketball.

The Tigers, who last played the Zebras in the 1996 sectional championship when they cruised to a 25-point win, jumped out to a 13-2 start and never looked back.

Rochester got as close as seven, 48-41, midway through the fourth quarter, but a steal and two free throws by Cabrera sparked a 10-3 run for the Tigers and Warsaw held its double-digit lead the rest of the way.

"We just didn't play smart for a short span," said Ogle. "When they did get it down to seven though, Shaun Cabrera made a big steal and got to the basket and got fouled and hit some free throws. Shaun is giving us another scoring threat and his confidence is getting better and better. He's shooting the ball much better."

Cabrera, who scored 10 points combined in the first two games, put up 16 last Friday against Fort Wayne South and 19 Friday evening against Rochester.

The 5-11 junior scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Tigers led 17-7 going into the second stanza was 4 of 8 from the field, 7 of 7 from the free throw line, and also finished the game with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Classmate Colin Clemens scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while senior Michael Wienhorst scored eight points and dished out seven assists.

He didn't have the shooting touch he had the first three games, a stretch in which he averaged 23 points per game, but Wienhorst did do the little things to help his team win.

Things like dishing out seven assists and pulling down four rebounds.

Wienhorst was double-teamed most of the game, which in turn hurt the Zebras as the 6-2 senior was able to consistently find an open teammate.

"Michael Wienhorst was the best player on the floor tonight," said Ogle. "He didn't score a bunch of points like he has, but his passing was very good. He proved tonight that he's a very difficult guy to double team. He made Rochester pay for tilting their defense toward him."

All totaled, Warsaw shot 22 of 44 (50 percent) from the field and dished out 17 assists.

Rochester, on the other hand, was 18 of 49 (36.7 percent) from the field, 4 of 13 from three-point range, and had just six assists.

"I thought our play tonight was very unselfish, especially in the second half," said Ogle.

Junior point guard John-Wesley Maierle had six points, seven rebounds and two steals for Warsaw, all the while not committing a turnover.

In a balanced scoring effort, senior Andrew Holladay scored seven points, while juniors Jordan Fuller and Mitchell Reinholt had four each. Classmate Matt Wood rounded out the scoring by hitting a free throw in the fourth quarter.

For Rochester, which fell to 2-2 on the season, Luke Smith scored 15, while Brantlyn Showley scored 12, Scott Thomas eight and Charles Gibbons five.

Ogle said his goal was to hold Kavan Hoff and Smith to 22 points or less combined.

The duo combined to scored 15, all of which came from Smith.

Hoff missed all three shots that he was able to get off against Warsaw's defense.

Warsaw led 17-7 after the first quarter, 30-19 at the break and 44-29 heading into the final frame.

Despite Rochester's clear height advantage, the Tigers out rebounded the Zebras 33-25.

Warsaw is in action again tonight when it hosts Penn, and then again Friday when it opens up Northern Lakes Conference play at rival Wawasee.

Rochester, which also lost by 12 points to Northern Lakes Conference opponent Plymouth, is in tonight at Caston.
