Puppy Mills

This week, “Today” aired a segment on Internet puppy sales – the results of an investigation linking a massive Internet dog seller, Purebred Breeders, to cruel puppy mills. Investigators visited and researched the facilities that sell puppies online and found dogs living in incredible conditions. Unfortunately, the Internet is a gold mine to puppy mills. They show cute puppies online, not the deplorable conditions the adult dogs endure.

Sadly, this is happening in our own backyard. State and federal records show 46 mills in LaGrange County, 38 in Elkhart County and a dozen in Kosciusko. These are puppy mills that supply dogs to stores around the country, as well as Internet sales. We estimate there are 28,480 dogs in puppy mills in our area, crated 24/7, churning out puppies fast as possible. There are more hidden in barns and sheds-sold to unsuspecting public who don’t understand their part in this horrible supply/demand chain.

Holidays are the year’s busiest puppy-buying season. We encourage the public to not purchase puppies from local pet stores – they are local puppy mill dogs. Instead, we invite them to adopt a wonderful animal at one of the shelters and rescues in the area. There are beautiful dogs there, just waiting for a forever home.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
