Kiefer Consulting and M.K. Betts Engineering presented contracts to Warsaw's Board of Public Works Friday regarding proposals for services and recommendations for the wastewater utility department and the rebuilding of two tanks at a plant on Market Street.

The board approved the contracts, allowing $7,470 to be spent for Kiefer services, including soil sampling, a provision of fertilizer and lime recommendations for local farmers and information regarding application rates for biosolids, the soil-like residue found in sewage after the wastewater treatment process.

M.K. Betts will receive no more than $10,000 to rebuild secondary tanks at the wastewater plant.

The wastewater treatment department has scheduled meetings throughout the month to prepare a long-term plan to control the combined sewage discharge in Walnut Creek at Center Street. The meetings are open to the public and will include discussing possible alternatives to meet future needs. The first meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 14 in city hall.

The Warsaw Parks Department presented requests before the board regarding approval for a $2,949 grant from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph. The monies from the grant will be used to support the department's Friday Morning Performing Arts Series. A contract to hire a magician for the department's August Family Carnival was approved by the board, as well as a contract for six announcements on WVPE public radio promoting the Blues and BBQ event scheduled July 15.

The board also:

• Approved a deed of dedication for right of way to SMOR Group, allowing the extension of Mariner's Drive to provide access from properties owned by SMOR to Lake City Highway and Silver Fox addition.

• Awarded Lake City Bank the bid to lease three city dump trucks. The vehicles will be delivered in July and will cost $203,082 per truck.

• Approved the parks department to trade in equipment. Rice Ford will charge the department $14,722 for a 2005 Ford pickup after the trade-in of the old vehicle.

• Approved $8,000 in financial support to the Cardinal Center for the Sus Amigos project. Sus Amigos, Ind. 15, Warsaw, assists Hispanic residents who are new to the community, to limit potential culture barriers.

• Approved $700.50 to be written off by the sewage collection office.

• Approved Matt Warren's travel request to attend the Fire Chief Conference held in Indianapolis July 20-22.

• Approved new hires and occupational adjustments. All changes in payroll were approved by the city council. [[In-content Ad]]
