It will be the second year for the shelter in Warsaw.
New Life Christian Church housed the shelter last year from December to February, and the shelter was housed at Salvation Army last March.[[In-content Ad]]"The homeless are hidden in this community and don't want to be seen because they feel they will get in trouble," said Ken Locke, Salvation Army community ministries director.
Locke said those in the county who are homeless often live in vehicles and abandoned warehouses.
"The one positive in all of this is that there are more people who are more sensitive in taking people into their homes, but that doesn't mean there still isn't homelessness," Locke said.
New Life Christian Church Pastor John Lowe said last year's shelter was a success.
"We want to keep those who stay at the shelter off private properties and vacant buildings and provide them with a safe place to stay," Lowe said. During last year's shelter that, there were 485 people provided with 121 nights of shelter.
Two people who stayed at the shelter were able to obtain housing last year, and a women with three kids who stayed at the shelter escaped from a dangerous home situation.
The shelter will reopen Tuesday at New Life Christian Church, 744 S. CR 325E, Warsaw, off of U.S. 30 and continue until March 31 at different locations in the county.
The shelter, with financial contributions from Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association and Warsaw Wesleyan Church, will transfer in January to the Salvation Army.
In February, the shelter will be housed at Christ's Covenant Church, 2090 E. Pierceton Road.
In March, the shelter will again be at Salvation Army, 501 Arthur St.
The only pick-up point for those who stay at the shelter this year will be at Salvation Army at 7 p.m. each night. They will be returned to the Salvation Army at 7 a.m. each morning.
Meals, shelter and shower facilities will be provided for those who stay at the shelter.
The shelter will again be overseen by Salvation Army, New Life Christian Church and the Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association.
Plans are to develop a permanent shelter in Warsaw, and Locke and Lowe have been looking since the end of last year for a location for a permanent shelter.
A fundraiser is being planned for Jan. 15 and 16 at New Life Christian Church to raise funds for the shelter.
Martial artist "Superfoot" Bill Wallace will teach five basic steps for a kick and punch. Wallace is an undefeated Professional Karate Association martial art champion.
The Jan. 15 event is from 7 to 10 p.m. and the Jan. 16 event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To learn more about the fund-raiser, visit New Life Christian Church's Web site at www.ihavenewlife.com
Monetary donations are needed for food and blankets. Checks can be made out to Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association, P.O. Box 1797, Warsaw, IN 46581; or people can go to www.gma.info where shelter updates will be given.
