Bill Landrigan and Dave Koontz stood outside Planned Parenthood holding pro-life signs Wednesday afternoon.

The white signs with blue lettering said "Pray To End Abortion, 40 Days For Life."

Landrigan, a Kosciusko County Right To Life board member, and Koontz, Right To Life director, joined with other volunteers to hold signs opposing abortions.

As they held the signs, drivers honked, waved and turned their heads to look at the signs as they drove by.

The volunteers are part of "40 Days For Life," a campaign that draws attention to abortion through the use of fasting, a constant prayer vigil and community outreach.

Vigil hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and participants will take turns praying and holding signs in shifts for the next 40 days until Nov. 1.

Landrigan said his purpose for participating in the campaign was to educate and raise the level of awareness of abortions in Kosciusko County. He also wanted to pray that abortions will be reduced in the county.

"I want to stir the heart of those who drive by, and I want to plant a seed for thinking and the Holy Spirit will go from there," Landrigan said.

He said Kosciusko County's Right To Life chapter is one of the most active chapters in Indiana.

Landrigan created white crosses that were previously displayed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School. Each cross represents four Kosciusko County babies lost to abortion since 1982. There were 504 crosses displayed.

"We've had positive feedback from the crosses and this county is spiritual by nature, but people forget abortions are represented in this county," Landrigan said.

The crosses are currently located at First Christian Church on Ranch Road, then will be be moved to the Grace College campus Friday for a week. The crosses will then be moved north of Silver Lake, and then will be placed at Victory Rock Church, Ind. 13.[[In-content Ad]]Landrigan said with people's busy lives, he is afraid they will forget abortion is present in the community. That is why he is joining with other campaign participants to shed light on the issue.

Koontz said those who attend the Right To Life banquet Monday at Grace College will be encouraged to volunteer to hold signs and pray during "40 Days For Life."

"So far we have gotten a lot of positive responses from holding signs, but there have been a few negative responses," Koontz said. "I hope through having something like this that people realize abortion affects our county."

Planned Parenthood is the number one abortion provider in the state and country and provides referrals for abortions, according to Koontz.

There are approximately 15 to 20 volunteers who have committed to holding signs. People who can hold a sign and pray for an hour or more are invited to volunteer.
