This is a letter to inform this community on the truth of who Mike Huckabee really is. There are a lot of rumors, such as Huckabee is not a true fiscal conservative or that Huckabee cannot win and that John McCain will be the inevitable nominee. These statements are lies that the media is feeding us.
The following statements are direct quotes from www.mikehuckabee.com On taxes: "As governor of Arkansas, I cut taxes and fees almost 100 times, saving the taxpayers almost $380 million. I left a surplus of nearly $850 million." "I pushed through the Arkansas Legislature the first major, broad-based tax cuts in state history - a $90 million tax relief package for Arkansas families. I also doubled the standard deduction to $2,000 for single taxpayers and $4,000 for those who are married."
Huckabee eliminated some taxes entirely: "the marriage penalty, bracket creep caused by inflation, income tax on poor families, and capital gains on home sales." Also, according to the Web site, "when Mr. Huckabee left office last January, he had turned a $200 million budget shortfall into an $844 million surplus." As far as the taxes that Governor Huckabee did raise, the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled in 2002 "that the state's school financing procedure was unconstitutional and ordered a more equitable plan - which led to $400 million in new taxes." These were court-ordered tax increases.
On the sanctity of life and marriage: Huckabee supports and has "consistently supported passage of a federal constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman." Also, he supports and has "always supported passage of a constitutional amendment to protect the right to life." Huckabee believes "that Roe v. Wade should be overturned."
Now having said all of this, please do not for one minute begin to think, "well, none of this matters now, McCain is ahead in this race and therefore is the inevitable nominee." He most definitely is not. Specifically to you, Christians out there who believe in miracles, I urge you to pray. Even as I write there are conference calls of prayer taking place across America praying for victory for Huckabee. Too many conservatives have left the ranks of what they believe and have joined the ranks of John McCain, who clearly is not 100 percent pro-life and not 100 percent pro-marriage in the traditional sense. Please do not be one of them.
If you have any questions about the things I have just written, I encourage you to check out www.mikehuckabee.com Also, we have a local meet-up group in support of Mike Huckabee. Our Web site is www.mikehuckabee.meetup.com/203 We will be having another meeting Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Courthouse Coffee by Elder Beerman. We will be glad to give you more information so that you can publicly begin to display your support for Mike Huckabee through yard signs, lapel pins, bumper stickers, etc. I realize that the Indiana primary is not until May, but we must begin to show our support now to let those who are skeptical and cynical know that Mike Huckabee has supporters who believe in him.
