A disaster drill for Warsaw will be conducted Aug. 8 at 3 p.m. to practice disaster preparation.

This mock disaster is taking place on a weekday instead of the usual weekend in order to test the preparation a little more than usual, said Ed Rock, Emergency Management director.[[In-content Ad]]The "mock disaster" will consist of a tornado starting at the West side and traveling through Warsaw. The "tornado" will be assumed to hit a structure containing a hazardous substance, and the hospital will be overloaded with patients.

At the County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Rock invited members to attend and watch. Statistics show that tornados usually hit between 3 and 6 p.m., Rock said.

Alex Pursely, Syracuse, along with Rollin Brown, attended the meeting to resolve an issue concerning his land and a 200-year-old tree. Around Eli Lilly and Warner roads, on the north end of Lake Wawasee, there is a tree so close to the road that Pursely's neighbor can't get his construction company's equipment in to build his new home.

While it would help if the tree was cut down, Pursely said this would be approaching on what he thought was his land, not to mention most of the neighborhood wants the tree to stay. Pursely came with an alternative of allowing a temporary situation, where he would take out his bushes and allow builders to move through his property around the tree, as long as everything is put back properly and he is not suffering any financial losses.

The fire department has approved this plan, and the commissioners supported it at the meeting.

Also at the meeting, the commissioners approved County Administrator Ron Robinson's proposal to complete the building of three test wells in Warsaw in the parking lot across from the county jail. Cost is around $6,900.

The commissioners approved a grant that the Health Department received from the state to pay for a clinic the Kosciusko Community Hospital is trying to build for smaller amenities. The state has authorized confirmation for the grant, and the K21 Foundation will build the new clinic.

The commission also approved to put new radio equipment on the new water tower in Syracuse. The cost is around $62,000, which will be taken from the Cumulative Capital Development Fund.

The commissioners approved County Highway Superintendent Dennis Pletcher's proposal for the replacement of a small structure on Fairlane Drive, Warsaw. Pletcher said they have a contract, working with the architecture firm RQAW Corp., South Bend, and the cost of the engineering is approximately $30,800.

A public hearing is set for Aug. 18 at 9 a.m. at the North Webster Community Center, concerning the proposal for the establishment of a Lakeland Regional Sewer District. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is taking public input at the hearing. A letter is going to all property owners in the Barbee Lakes area.

Robinson announced a letter received asking for use of county equipment. The commissioners agreed with Robinson and approved for a notice to be sent out explaining they do not lend out county equipment for personal use.
