About 40 poll workers, clerks, judges and inspectors attended an informational meeting Monday afternoon to review new election day procedures and new ballot equipment.

Prior to signing the poll book, voters will be asked to present photo identification cards generated by state or federal governments.

Voters with appropriate identification will be asked to sign the poll book below their signature. Signatures have been electronically scanned and appear along with the voter's name and address in the poll book.

The IDs must have an expiration date, or have expired after the last general election (Nov. 2, 2004).

If a voter's address doesn't match the one on the provided ID, additional proof of identity may be requested. Items like utility bills or bank statements are acceptable as supporting identification.

If a challenged voter hasn't signed the poll list, he or she may return with proper identification.

Voters who are challenged may cast provisional ballots and present proper identification to the county election board no later than May 12.

That's just one of the new regulations prescribed by the Help America Vote Act.

Because Tuesday's election is a primary, voters must declare which political party ballot they want to select.

In Kosciusko County, Direct Record Electronic/Touch Screen Voting Systems are being used for the first time.

Eligible voters will be escorted to the voting machine by the two poll judges. One judge will insert a card to engage a new ballot; one judge will select "Republican" or "Democrat" for the voter. Voters can choose either. The two officials will then leave the voter in the booth.

The list of offices and candidates will appear on a touch screen. Votes are cast by pressing buttons beside a candidate's name. An "X" appears in a box by the selected candidate's name.

Voters may lighten or darken the touch screen for their ease in reading.

Votes may be changed with this system and another candidate selected. For example, a voter changes her mind or presses the wrong button, voting for Candidate A. She wants to vote for Candidate B. The button by Candidate A's name must be pressed again - to remove the "X" by Candidate A. The button by Candidate B must be pressed to cast a ballot for them.

To continue through the offices, voters must press a button by "Next Page" at the lower right hand corner of each "page."

The ballot and all votes can be reviewed by going "backward" through the ballot.

For a ballot to count, voters must 1) press a "confirm vote" ballot and 2) press a red "cast vote button" to finish the process.

If a voter leaves a ballot incomplete, the judges can see whether or not the confirm vote button was pressed correctly and "finish" voting by pressing the "cast vote button." [[In-content Ad]]
