A Cromwell woman reported to the sheriff's department Thursday morning that she received a letter and check in the mail from Star Capital Securities Inc., International Claim Dept., Chatham, Ontario, Canada. The woman told the sheriff's department that it did not look right, so she decided to turn it in to the sheriff's department.[[In-content Ad]]The sheriff's department does not want anyone to fall for the scam. Detective Todd Sautter said the number one thing is for people not to fall for the scam. Do not cash the check. The scam is out of Canada, but anyone receiving the scam can report it to the local law enforcement.
The letter informs the recipient that she is one of the declared winners of North American Shoppers Sweepstakes held May 5 in the second category. The recipient is told the organization "made many unsuccessful attempts to contact you regarding this winning. You are therefore entitled to the sum of $125,000. This is from total prize money of $5 million that was shared and presented among the other 40 declared second category winners."
The letter states all participants were selected through a random computer ballot system drawn from more than 100,000 names.
To expediate the process, the sender encloses a check for $4,875, which is part of the winnings being sent, according to the letter. The purpose of the check, the letter states, is for the recipient to be able to pay for the applicable government taxes on the winning. The letter states the tax amount is $2,975 for the government tax, to be paid either by Moneygram or Western Union directly to the tax agent.
The address on the check is Bay Cities Bank, 18315 US Highway 41N, Lutz, FL 33549-4468.
When the winning is processed, the letter states, the recipient will receive their final check, a lump sum of $120,125, delivered by FedEx.
The letter tells the recipient not to use the check until they call the provided phone number. The letter is signed by promotion manager Brenda Hicks.
