Four arrests in the past two days have cleared several burglary cases from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department files, including one in which a backhoe and other large items were taken.

William Nathan Golden, 26, of 61 EMS W22 Lane, North Webster, and David Walter Hawthorne, 24, of 8264 N. Syracuse-Webster Road, Syracuse, were arrested Tuesday evening. Each was charged with theft and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail. Golden was also served with a warrant in a civil matter; his bond was set at $1,700 and he also is being held for authorities in Goshen. Hawthorne is being held without bond.

On Wednesday afternoon, police also arrested Joshua Joktan Golden, 18, of 61 EMS W22 Lane, North Webster, charged with theft from a shed or outbuilding, and Matthew Taulbee Walters, 18, of 2 EMS W22 Lane, charged with burglary to a permanent residence. Both are being held without bond in the county jail.

According to Detective Sgt. Sam Whitaker, the arrest of these four individuals closes the books on several thefts of tools from area construction sites, as well as other outstanding burglary cases.

A backhoe, lawn mower, garden tractor, trimmer and chainsaws taken from an outbuilding belonging to Steve Meck were among the items allegedly taken by the suspects. Whitaker said 90 percent of Meck's property has been recovered.

Police also have recovered one of two go-carts and a chainsaw taken from a shed at the Dennis Robinson residence on Chapman Lake, two personal watercraft belonging to Stephanie Shilling and taken from a North Webster residence, and some of the tools taken from a new construction site at which L&S Construction was working. A 1951 Harley-Davidson motorcycle taken from Brian Scott of North Webster has not been recovered but reportedly was among the items stolen by the suspects. Police are working to retrieve it from the person who purchased it.

The foursome also allegedly admitted taking guns and a crossbow from a pole barn in the county, but police have not yet determined when or where that incident took place.

Whitaker said the stolen items were reportedly being traded for crack cocaine and additional arrests are expected. Aiding in the investigation were deputies J.D. Ayres and Jeff Bronsing. [[In-content Ad]]
