PIERCETON - Police are seeking help from the community in determining the identity of a masked man who robbed the Pierceton branch of Lake City Bank while armed with an ax.

The suspect apparently surprised the first employee at the bank when she arrived between 8:30 and 9 a.m. to begin opening for the day. Police would not comment on whether the man was in the bank or came in with the employee.

Once inside, the suspect allegedly forced the employee to open a vault and to give up the keys to her personal vehicle. She was then forced into a closet and the suspect fled the scene in the employee's car with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect is described as about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He was wearing a blue shirt and blue pants and had a ski mask covering his face. The man's age and race are not known; his clothing covered any skin that might otherwise be exposed, police said.

The employee's car was later found abandoned near Regency Point Estates, about one-half mile east of Pierceton. Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department Detective Travis Marsh said investigators were able to lift fingerprints from inside the vehicle.

No similar cases are being investigated in Kosciusko County. The Pierceton branch was last robbed by a man at gunpoint in April 2000.

Assisting at the scene of the robbery were officers from Pierceton and Winona Lake police departments and Indiana State Police.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to contact the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department at 267-5667. [[In-content Ad]]
