Poles Block Progress Of Lake Wawasee Trailhead
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Steve Kelly has run into another bump along the development road for the Lake Wawasee trailhead and went to the commissioners Tuesday for help.
In August the board approved a permit to proceed with the portion of the trail he is overseeing.
Plans call for moving or removing Sprint utility poles along Turkey Creek Road, a bill Sprint doesn't want, according to Kelly. He reported the cost to move the poles is $100,000, a cost the trailhead committee doesn't want, either.
Kelly would like county representatives to contact Sprint and show support for the trail. He thought telephone company's lines ought to be buried, anyway.
"No subdivisions have poles standing anymore," he said, "and if these poles remain it will kill the project."
Commissioner Brad Jackson said he doubted the county could mandate the poles' removal.
"I know of developers who have wanted deceleration lanes installed and they have had to negotiate independently with the utilities."
Commissioner Ron Truex said Ron Robinson could contact NIPSCO and Sprint regarding their policies.
The board also:
• Approved a fundraiser through the Association of Indiana Counties to benefit government employees who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina.
• Approved a request by the United Way to place a thermometer graphic on the courthouse lawn from Oct. 1 to Nov. 30.
• Approved 2006 paid holidays.
• Approved the reappointment of Joe Todd to the Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District.
• Approved a rezoning request by Gary Baker to change 6.712 acres in Harrison Township from Industrial II to Agricultural. The property was a former tire collection area, located just outside of Atwood.
• Approved an agreement with Noble County to exchange global information system data.
• Approved flood insurance recertification excepting Milford, North Webster and other unincorporated areas.
County commissioners are Avis Gunter, Brad Jackson and Ron Truex. [[In-content Ad]]
