By Staff Report-
The goals of Plant the Seed, Read! are to cultivate a love of reading, promote a sense of community, encourage reading for pleasure and knowledge, and illustrate the 40 Developmental Assets® as defined by the Search Institute, according to a press release from KLS.
Placed in yellow bins at locations throughout the county, 650 copies of “Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe” are available to residents of Kosciusko County. Each of the six area libraries hosts a bin.
Residents are asked to read the selection, pass it on to a friend, or return it to a bin; and to discuss the book and the 40 Developmental Assets® with friends and discussion groups.
Kosciusko Literacy Services Executive Director Cynthia Cates stated, “‘Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe’ was selected to add poetry as a genre to the community book reads and to highlight many of Poe’s stories. Poe’s stories and poems have resonated with generations of readers.”
Both the Plant the Seed, Read! website (www.kcread.org) and the Kosciusko Literacy Services website (www.kosciuskoliteracyservices.org) have more details on the selection including the bin locations.
In mid-April, Professor Elliot Engel will be lecturing on the “Tortured Genius of Edgar Allan Poe” at Milford Middle School, Edgewood Middle School and Tippecanoe Valley Middle School. In addition to the availability of “Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe,” all middle school language arts classes and sixth-grade classes in Kosciusko County will be receiving copies of “Poetry for Young People Edgar Allan Poe” and “Saddleback’s Illustrated Classics™ The Best of Poe.”
To encourage younger readers, the first-grade classes in Kosciusko County will receive copies of “Button Up! Wrinkled Rhymes” by Alice Schertle. This funny book of children’s poetry is about clothes from the clothes’ point-of-view. In addition, over 560 preschoolers enrolled in Kosciusko Literacy Services’ Read to Grow Children's Book Club will each receive two poetry books in March and April. Mostly written by Dr. Seuss, these selections appeal to young children.
Children also may enter the Graphic Novel Contest and the Book Cover Contest. All ages may enter the Essay/Poetry Contest. Rules are available at kcread.org.
Book discussions are planned at the Milford Public Library on Monday at 6:30 p.m. and at the Warsaw Community Public Library April 18 at 6:30 p.m.
The press release concludes, “Kosciusko Literacy Services invites adults and teens to read ‘Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe,’ to discuss Poe’s works, and to read poetry to and with younger children.”[[In-content Ad]]
