Plymouth Tramples Triton
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
BOURBON - Plymouth guard Brian Wray had 32 points. The entire Triton team had 35. The rest of the Pilgrims added 34 to trample Triton 66-35 Friday.
The Trojans came out and played tough early. At the end of the first quarter Triton was down only one 13-12, but then in the second quarter Wray took control. He scored 19 points in the quarter, and Plymouth held the Trojans to nine.
From then on it was just a downward slide. Triton could only manage 14 points in the second half and let Plymouth get easy baskets.
"We did come out ready to play. We just let it get away from us," Triton coach Kevin O'Rourke said. "(Plymouth) is a great basketball team I have nothing but good things to say about them."
Plymouth won with an all-around effort. While Wray led in scoring, Joel Grindle dominated everything else. He had 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks. He, along with Chris Davis, kept Triton out of the paint and forced them to take jumpers. With the Trojan big men unable to get going, Plymouth's guards were able to step into passing lanes and create fastbreak baskets.
It also didn't hurt the Pilgrims that Wray shot 12-of-17 from the field. Wray came into Friday night's game averaging 28.5 ppg. He proved against Triton why he is one of the top players in the area; perhaps even in the state.
"He deserves everything he gets," O'Rourke said of Wray. "I have nothing but praise for him."
After the game O'Rourke stressed that his team needed to play a complete game.
"If we play together for 32 minutes we will play well," he said. "Not seven minutes here or six minutes there."
Andy Westafer, Nick Treber, and Mason McIntyre each had six points.
The Trojans drop to 1-4 and will play in the Culver Holiday Tournament Thursday and Friday. Plymouth is 4-0. [[In-content Ad]]
