Plymouth Too Much For Valley Girls
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON - Thursday night Plymouth's Stacey Wendel celebrated her birthday against Valley.
It was Wendel giving the gifts as she poured in 23 points on 10-of -6 shooting to lead the Pilgrims to a 50-33 win.
Wendel, who missed a practice this week for the birth of a niece, didn't start Thursday and watched as Plymouth jumped out to a 5-0 lead. She entered the game at the 5:17 of the first quarter with the Vikings trailing 5-2.
That's as close as Valley would get.
Early shooting woes combined with Plymouth's domination of the offensive and defensive rebound categories put the Vikings in a hole early.
Plymouth led 10-2 after one quarter and the Vikings didn't hit their first field until the 7:30 mark of the second quarter when Danielle Howard hit a lay-up to make the score 10-4. Valley's first points of the game came off two Heather Rathbun free throws.
The Pilgrims capped an 11-2 run in the second quarter on a spectacular play by point guard Austen Black.
Black jumped in a Valley passing lane and as she dove for the ball as it went out of bounds, she flipped the ball to Jessica Foust at half court. Foust drove strong for the lay-up to give the Pilgrims a 25-8 lead.
Plymouth extended its lead to 29-10 at halftime. The Pilgrims are known as a defensive team, and in their last game against state-ranked Valpo, held a team led by UConn-bound Cassie Kerns to 22 points.
"We spend a lot of time on defense and they've bought into it," said Plymouth head coach Dave Cox.
After the game, Cox said his team was upset at giving up 30 points, but for Valley it was a battle to score 20 points in the final two quarters.
The Pilgrims extended their lead to 40-12 with 4:25 left in the third quarter before Chelsy Rhoades scored five quick points for Valley.
The sophomore guard finished with eight points for Valley. Kara Kramer led the team in scoring with 9 points on 4 of 13 shooting that included a rare four-point play attempt. Kramer nailed a three-pointer late in the third period and was undercut while shooting. The ball caromed high off the back of the rim before dropping down and in. Kramer missed on her free throw try.
Valley began to put some things together offensively in the final quarter and tallied 12 points, more than they scored in the first 16 minutes and change.
"The intensity level really came up in the last half," said Valley head coach Gary Teel. "The kids have got to come out and play a full basketball game. I think we came out and let Plymouth kind of intimidate us."
Intimidation is easy for a Plymouth squad that has its sights set on not only a Northern Lakes Conference championship but also possibly a run at a state championship.
"Plymouth is a quality ball club. They just came out and we let them step up on top of us and control us for a while and we just didn't get going," said Teel.
Elaine Hessel added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Pilgrims while Black finished the evening with five points, five rebounds and six steals.
Howard came off the bench for Valley and scored five points.
While the Vikings had turnover troubles early and finished with 21, they forced the Pilgrims into 15 of their own.
The Vikings, 3-3 overall, open up their TRC schedule at Oak Hill Saturday.
