After falling 5-0 in its regular season match against Plymouth, the Wawasee girls soccer team took a different approach in Tuesday’s Sectional 7 opener at Warsaw Community High School.
Packing the defense in tight, the Wawasee Lady Warriors kept the score tight, losing 2-0, but were outshot 37-1 in the process.
“The game in-season, they weren’t playing so defensively with so many inside the 18,” Plymouth coach Stephanie Ferch said.
The strategy worked for a half, resulting in a 0-0 tie, but Plymouth broke the draw with an odd goal one minute into the second half.
Getting some space, Plymouth junior Stacy Diaz had a shot hit the crossbar, but as it came down, it must have crossed the goal line.
Instead of the call being made immediately, the girls played on until Wawasee junior goalkeeper Nicole Streby swatted the ball out of harm.
However, the head official then ran to the line judge, who signaled Diaz’s initial shot had indeed been a score.
Once the confusion was settled, Plymouth was awarded a 1-0 lead with 39:00 showing on the scoreboard.
“We had the ball at midfield, then turned it over, and chaos broke out at that point,” Wawasee coach Doug Heinisch said about the sequence. “When you have the ball on your end too much, things like that happen.
“I’ll give them credit, because no one was sitting around feeling sorry for themselves,” he added. “We questioned it, but not much we could do about it, so let’s get back to playing. And we did, and got right back in there.”
Wawasee did continue to battle, but once Plymouth senior Bailey Brown scored off an assist from junior Emily Morris in the 63rd minute, the outcome was pretty much decided, as the Warriors struggled to maintain possession.
“They just needed to get that security of having the lead,” Ferch said. “After that, they were playing a little more confident up top.”
The win pushes Plymouth (8-5-4) into Thursday’s semifinals, where it will face Culver Girls Academy (10-5), following the 5 p.m. match between Warsaw (11-2) and NorthWood.
Warsaw has won four-straight sectional titles.
While his team’s not moving on, Heinisch did say his team showed improvement, finishing the year at 2-15.
“We definitely improved this season,” he said. “I’ve told the girls, ‘The season’s a journey.’ We made good progress during the season, but we always saw it as we had a ways to go.”
Even by playing so defensively against Plymouth, Streby was still needed on numerous occasions, getting 11 saves, including a shot on goal she had to punch out in the 12th minute, then got another nice save in the 29th.
“Nicole’s been solid all year,” Heinisch said. “When we came into the season, we had three top problems we needed to address, and one of them was goal. What were we going to do? Nicole really didn’t play in goal for us last year, but she’s stepped in and been solid. The ones she’s supposed to save, she does, and she gets a few others too.”
