The activities will focus on safety tips and information, with a special emphasis on making the learning experiences fun and memorable for everyone in the family.
Among the activities planned are: Safe Assured Kids ID kits containing digital photo ID cards and a mini-CD encrypted with personal data, provided by the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist's Club; dental screenings by Dr. William Myers; Build & Grow activity kits provided by Lowe's; pet micro chipping provided by the Animal Welfare League (small fee involved); "Dress Like a Lineman" photos, A.C. Sparks safety show, and bucket truck rides provided by Kosciusko REMC.
Other activities will include a bicycle rodeo, make-and-take first aid kits, impaired driving simulation goggles; and the fire safety Save-A-Life trailer and hazards obstacle course.
Also scheduled are rope rescue demonstrations by the WFD and water rescue demonstrations by the WPD DIVE team; hourly K-9 demonstrations by the WFD, WPD and KCSD; a display of emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, Samaritan and Lutheran helicopters, Kosciusko County disaster response/incident command trailer, and a bucket truck from KREMC.
A Dalmatian bouncer, sponsored by the North Webster Lions Club, and a maze and slide sponsored by DARE will be available for children. Sparky the Fire Dog and the Crash Test Dummies will meet and greet attendees.
A variety of health and safety organizations also will have booths in the Center Lake Pavilion to provide safety information and materials. Cheerleaders from Lakeview Middle School will be on hand to sell ice cream, popcorn and soft drinks.
"When Kosciusko REMC learned about this event, we knew that it was a natural fit to help us promote the safety messages about electricity that we need to get out to our members and the community," said KREMC's Manager of Marketing & Communications Doris Lemert. "We were glad to come on board and assist in making this event bigger and better than ever, and we're delighted to work with these vital community organizations."
Family Safety Day originally started in September 2004 by Stacey Page, a newspaper reporter at the time and current news director at WRSW/ESPN/Willie Radio; Joella Smyth, principal of Edgewood Middle School; and Ann Sweet, national spokesperson for Focus On Safety, a campaign to stop the running of red lights. The original intent of the program was to educate the community on the dangers of flammable Halloween costumes, and it has grown through the years to cover all aspects of safety, including fire safety; stranger danger; bicycle safety; weather safety; poison prevention, and electric safety.
"The event wasn't held last year," said Warsaw Fire Chief Mike Rice, "but we felt so strongly about the importance of this event that we've worked hard to bring it back, and make it bigger and better than ever. We hope the community comes out to enjoy all the fun activities at Play It Safe Family Safety Day, and learn some important safety facts presented by all the participating organizations."
In addition to KREMC's sponsorship of the event, many companies have made financial and product donations. These companies include Biomet, Bodkin Abstract Co., DePuy, Donan Engineering, Fahl Manufactured Homes, Grossnickle Eye Center, Hardesty Printing, Lakeside Chevrolet, Mike Gill Auto & Truck, Nelson Beverage, North Pointe Cinemas, North Webster Lions Club, Rock Bottom Furniture, Safe-Way Door, Wal-Mart and Zimmer Corp.
