'Pirates' Land At Triton

BOURBON - Pirates will be looking for bounty and the hands of maidens this weekend in Bourbon.

Their story will be presented as Triton High School Performing Arts Dept. offers its performance of "Pirates of Penzance."

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday in the Triton High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $4 presale, and $5 at the door.

According to a synopsis of the musical provided by director Peter J. Foster, when Frederic (Lukas Salley) was a little boy, his nurse, Ruth (Stephanie Stichter), was told to apprentice him to a pilot. Not hearing correctly, she apprenticed him to a band of pirates, remaining with them herself as a maid. Frederic served dutifully. As the curtain rises, his indenture is almost up, and Frederic is preparing to leave the pirate band and devote himself to the extermination of piracy.

A group of girls, wards of Major-General Stanley (Thomas Eiser), arrive on the scene to have a holiday. One of them, Mabel (Chrissi Schaetzle), takes an interest in Frederic, and he in her. The other girls are seized by the pirates and threatened with immediate marriage. When the Major-General arrives, he frees the girls by lying to the pirates, saying he is an orphan so they will feel sorry for him.

This lie troubles Major-General Stanley as he sits brooding among the ruins of his ancestral home. He is consoled by his wards and by Frederic's plan to lead a band of police against the pirates.

The Pirate King (Matthew Harvey) and Ruth come to Frederic to tell him that he was bound to the pirates until his 21st birthday. Since Frederic was born on Feb. 29, he has only five birthdays. Frederic's strong sense of duty compels him to rejoin the pirates. He tells them of the Major-General's deception, and they vow revenge. They overpower the police and seize the Major-General.

The police charge the pirates to yield "in the name of Queen Victoria." This they do. Ruth explains that the pirates are not really pirates, but "noblemen who have gone wrong." The Major-General pardons them and permits them to marry his wards.

Songs included in the one-hour musical include "Pirate King," "For He Is A Major-General" and "When A Felon's Not Engaged In His Employment."

Other cast members of the show include Chandler Tracy as Samuel and Dylan Senff as Edward, sergeant of police.

The Major-General's daughters are played by Emmille Long, Abbey Reichert, Bethany Kern, Brittany Riffle, Ryley Cripps, Britney Edington, Almeda Hutchison, Chelsie Kauffman, Katie Wilcox, Jamie Yungandreas, Jessica Creech and Jennifer Strycker.

The pirates are Jeff Ross, Chris Sechrist, Joey Teeple, Corey Thomas, Ethan Yazel and Zack Clark.

The police are Brandon Haines, Aaron Haines, Drew Fleagle and Abraham, while Queen Victoria is played by Rebekah Ousley.[[In-content Ad]]
