PIERCETON - Angie Shirk, of the Housing Opportunities of Warsaw, updated Pierceton town board members Jerry Kreger, Terry Hill and Ron Hall Monday regarding housing grant funding. She said the board should have word from various sources by July 22.

A grant application for $13,500 has been forwarded to the Kosciusko Community Foundation. The money, if awarded, will be used to secure a $200,000 grant from the Indiana Housing Financing Authority for an owner-occupied housing rehabilitation program. A 10-percent match of $20,000 must be secured. The town has about $2,000 set aside for the project.

The clerk's office is still taking pre-applications for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation. Four pre-applications have been accepted to date.

The board heard from fire chief Gene Barnett regarding the purchase of OSHA-compliant air packs. The chief was advised the town had some funds available for the packs, however, a written price estimate would have to be provided to the board.

In new business the board:

• Reviewed five variance requests.

• Approved two 10-year tax abatements.

Contech plans a plant expansion in the amount of $5 million, and $19 million in new equipment, for a total of $24 million. Contech employs 48 people. Additional 107 employees would be added to the roster with improvements.

Paragon Inc. plans a 225-by-150-foot plant addition. The abatement calls for $1 million in real estate improvements and $1.2 million for machinery costs. Fifteen people would be added to the 84 currently working there.

• Asked Brad Nestel, utilities supervisor, to secure a quote on videotaping sewer lines.

• Introduced an ordinance regarding specifications and standards for new sewer installations.

• Noted the chipper has arrived. No scheduled set-up was announced on how it will be used.

The chipper will shred natural debris. The material is then to be used for soil erosion control around the wastewater treatment plant.

The purchase is part of a set of orders by IDEM to solve the filtration problems at the wastewater treatment facility. IDEM paid half the costs for the machine.

• Noted installation of the water line for Contech is complete and test results are pending. [[In-content Ad]]
