By Staff Report-

PIERCETON – Pierceton will soon begin the construction of a walking and biking trail thanks to the generosity of a longtime resident.
Barbara Faris resided in Pierceton for more than 60 years and was actively involved in the community, including serving as a volunteer EMT for the local ambulance service and Habitat for Humanity, according to a provided press release. Upon her death in 2013, Faris gave a portion of her estate as an unrestricted gift to K21 Health Foundation.
When the town of Pierceton approached K21 for consideration to financially support a walking and biking trail, K21 directors decided to honor Faris and her commitment to the Pierceton community by using her donation to fund the trail at the Pierceton Washington Township Park. Once completed, the trail will offer walkers, joggers and riders the option of completing one-quarter mile, one-third mile or half-mile loops. Future plans include extending the trail through downtown Pierceton, the release states.
“This trail will be ideal for all our residents no matter their ages or abilities,” said Pierceton Town Manager Chip Hill. “The proximity to ADA compliant restrooms and parking will also be a major benefit to everyone who uses the trails.”
Rich Haddad, K21 Health Foundation, is quoted in the press release as saying, “The opportunity for citizens in all our communities to have access to facilities that encourage physical fitness and healthy living is a high priority for K21 Health Foundation. Greenway trails and active paths are an excellent way for us to help the long-term health and wellness of their citizens. We were excited to impact the Pierceton community directly with the generous gift that Faris provided K21 through her estate.”
The K21 directors also appropriated funding for trail signage to honor Faris and her many years of services to the Pierceton community.
Construction of the Barbara Faris Trail is slated to begin in July. For more information about the trail, contact Hill at 574-594-2213.
K21 Health Foundation exists for the benefit of Kosciusko County citizens to ensure health care services are provided and to advance prevention and healthy living.
