PIERCETON - Pierceton Town Council voted Monday night to proceed with steps toward the first water rate increase since 1997.

Eric Walsh, from Umbaugh and Associates, gave a report to the council concerning the water rates.

Under Umbaugh's plan, users who consume around 5,000 gallons a month would see a $6.43 increase.[[In-content Ad]]The minimum rate for Pierceton residents starts at 2,200 gallons a month. Those customers would see about a $2 increase a month.

Walsh said the increase would help the town in issuing bonds and seeking grants.

The council voted to give town attorney Jim Walmer permission to work on an ordinance for a rate increase.

The American Legion's Memorial Day parade in Pierceton will start at 10:45 a.m. May 31 at Pierceton Elementary and go to the town park.

Also, Sammons said that Pierceton Elementary's DARE graduation will start at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Sammons detailed a federal program where the government would pay for an officer for three years then the town would be on the hook to pay the officer for at least 12 months.

Sammons said Pierceton was initially put on a status pending list but recently received a letter stating they were being considered.

Sammons said they will have more information in June.

Pierceton currently has three full-time officers.

Utilities Superintendent Chip Hill invited Pierceton residents to bring in historical photos of Pierceton and residents for a collage that is being worked on.

Those with photos can come in May 21 from 1 to 6 p.m.

Pierceton Fire Chief Matt Brubaker said the town's recent fish fry was a success and that it had its biggest turnout since 1995.
