PIERCETON – With Memorial Day approaching, David and Sally Reuter thought it was a great time to honor soldiers and veterans.
The Reuters, Pierceton Chamber of Commerce members who have a son stationed in Afghanistan, presented a plan at a recent meeting and the Chamber offered to purchase the flags to display.
Their son, Benjamin C. Reuter, will be in Afghanistan until August.  He is a tank commander and 1st lieutenant in the Marines.
Being a mom, Sally wanted to do something to honor her son for his service.  For two years, she has been thinking of hanging flags in town.  She had been told that it couldn’t be done, until now.
She was determined to have them fly while her son is overseas and also wanted to do something to honor all the active soldiers, retired vets and fallen soldiers from the area. She also wanted to do it for the families that sacrifice by having loved ones in harm’s way.
She told Chamber President Donna Fisher, “It is very hard living your life knowing a loved one could lose their life defending our country.  Our lives must go on as normal as possible and try to talk with them in a snip of time whenever you can. These flags look beautiful flying and dresses up our town of Pierceton.”
The Pierceton Fire Department along with David Reuter assisted in the installation of the flags.
The flags will be flying until Labor Day.
Pierceton will celebrate its military past and present at the Pierceton Open House June 22 at the Community Building in Pierceton, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  It is open to all and is free of charge.[[In-content Ad]]
