PIERCETON - Pierceton Town Council approved a resolution at their meeting Monday to apply for a water project grant.

Grant writer Bob Murphy explained the grant, and the resolution was passed without any public comment.

In Monday night's meeting minutes, obtained by the Times-Union, Carl Finken presented a petition asking for the removal of Pierceton officer Matt Owens.[[In-content Ad]]Finken presented the petition with more than 200 signatures, though according to the names on there 80 percent of those signees are not town residents. According to the minutes, Finken claimed that many of the names were those who worked in Pierceton.

During the town council's April meeting, Town Marshal Tim Sammons addressed issues some residents had with Owens. Sammons also cleared up some residents' perceptions that Owens left his former job as an officer in Mentone in poor standing.

Both Sammons and Mentone Town Marshal Jim Eads said that wasn't the case during the April meeting and Eads said he was "losing a good officer" when Owens left.

The board took no action after receiving the petition.

The board also took a next step in raising water rates. The board introduced an ordinance to raise water rates.

There will be a public hearing on the water rates during the board's August meeting. If passed, the rates would go into effect in October.

Also, according to minutes from Monday's meeting, the board and Pierceton Days director Kim Rose held a lengthy discussion concerning the festival with the board finally approving a resolution of support for Rose and Pierceton Days.
