Around 1:20 a.m. Thursday, a Pierceton man reported that an unknown person broke into his home and then tried to hit him with a baseball bat.
The victim told police he was in bed with his wife when he heard a noise coming from their dining room. He then saw a shadow pass the door to the bedroom.
When the victim got up to investigate, he said a short man wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with the hood covering his face stepped into his path and swung an object that looked like a baseball bat that grazed his chest.
The victim said he fell backward into the bedroom and the bat hit a bi-fold door that separates the bedroom from the dining room of the home.
The burglar then ran from the home and the victim said he heard a car door slam and the sound of an engine start from an area northeast of the residence.
The burglar reportedly took several hand tools used to repair electronics that were lying on the floor of the victim's kitchen. A drawer to an end table and the doors to an entertainment center also were found open, but the victim did not believe anything was missing.
Warsaw Cpl. Joel Beam and his K-9, Buddy, were called to the scene to try to track the suspect. Buddy picked up a scent and tracked it from the back door of the residence, around two outbuildings and ended at Main Lane where a set of fresh tire tracks were found on the dirt road.
Upon further investigation, officers found a black bag with miscellaneous tools in it on the north side of the residence as well as a claw hammer and a large pill organizer. The victim said the claw hammer did not belong to him, and police took it into evidence.
Police were unable to find any pry marks or signs of forced entry at the home.
The incident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.[[In-content Ad]]
